Tessalyn's parents were travellers, going from place to place in search of adventure. They had only a horse, a carriage, food and the clothes off of their backs, but they were happy. The couple was even happier when Tessa was born, though they had to work harder to provide food. The family kept on their travels for eight more years until they were ambushed by a pack of thieves. Tessalyn's mother was sick at the time, so they left her behind and took Tess and her dad to a slave market. They were sold into different owners and they never saw each other again.

The girl grew up in an abusive home with two other young kids. One was a girl and the other a boy; the boy was three years older and the girl was a year younger. Tessa made friends with them, and the days in that house didn't seem too bad. She was abused several times a day, but she never said anything and just kept working. She was a strong girl with an even stronger heart. When she turned thirteen, she accidentally broke a very important item in the house. The boy took the blame and was beaten to death in front of the two girls. She suffers terrible guilt because of this.

Finally, when Tessalyn turned sixteen, she escaped the house with the other slave girl, whose name was Aura. They lived together on the streets, gathering knowledge and thieving skills. They went their separate ways after two years and Tess went to find her father. She searched for a year and a half and never found a trace of him. She assumed the worst and started her own life.
